Funeral director’s cooking skills win TV show
Peter Pickering swapped funerals for food when he took part in Channel 4 TV series Come Dine With Me.
Peter, funeral service manager at The Co-operative Funeralcare in Rugby, Daventry and Royal Leamington Spa, fulfilled a long-standing ambition when he appeared on the sho. The seasoned dinner host said the icing on the cake came when he went on to win the £1,000 prize.
The show brings five strangers together at a series of dinner parties, which take place at their respective homes over five consecutive nights. As part of the show, contestants are asked to cook a three-course meal and lay on entertainment for their guests.
At the end of every night the four guests are asked to score the host’s dinner party out of 10 and the winner wins £1,000.
Peter, who lives in Flore, Northamptonshire, wooed his fellow contestants with a layered smoked salmon terrine starter, a main course of slow roasted pork belly with Bramley apple mash and a calvados reduction, and white chocolate and marmalade brioche bread and butter pudding for dessert.
For entertainment, he brought in a 1940s-style singer to complement his 1940s-style themed night.
Peter said his career choice was the topic of conversation during the week, adding: “Come Dine With Me is one of the best programmes on TV for me.
“To appear on the show was a dream come true. I think the producers tried to mix it up a bit so we would provide great entertainment by not getting on, but the truth is we all got on extremely well – the rest of the contestants were all intrigued by the fact I worked in funerals!”
