Stone art takes stage at festival

An exhibition of memorial and other stone art was the star attraction at Masters and Son Funeral Directors of Lindfield, East Sussex, when the firm got involved in the town’s third arts festival.

Work by Julie Rezac sat alongside examples from stone carvers and letter cutters Christopher Elsey and Geoff Aldre. There was also a demonstration of letter-cutting by Masters and Son’s resident artist Bridget Powell.

Other artists exhibited included Andrew Whittle, Gary Breeze, John Das Gupta, John Nielson, Stuart Buckle and Eric Marland.

The works were displayed courtesy of the Memorial Arts charity, which works with over 70 fine letter carvers, to enable Britain’s long tradition of letter carving to flourish. They promote an apprenticeship scheme, workshops, The Art & Memory Collection and various publications.

There was also a chance for visitors to have a go at letter cutting during the weekend.
