Now you can interact with headstones
A company in the USA is offering to add a QR (quick response) code to headstones.
This means that, when family or loved ones scan it, the headstone reveals additional information about the deceased person, including photos, videos and text about the life they lived.
Quiring Monuments Seattle claims its new Living Headstones connect families regardless of where they live, with an interactive memorial that is “a legacy for future generations”; one that “blends the timeless tradition of granite headstones with the newest technology available”.
“While technology has allowed for more mobility, it has also increased the separation of families worldwide,” says the company’s website. “What hasn’t changed is our desire to keep memories of loved ones alive for future generations.”
A Living Headstone archive website contains information that comes from friends and family about a loved one. This could be an obituary, family heritage and history, photos, comments by friends and relatives and even links to share content on social sites.
Quiring Monuments adds a link to the memorial that enables users of smart phones to connect to this personalised website. It can be viewed on the phone as visitors wander through the cemetery or on a computer by typing the unique web address into an internet browser.
Although others may view the information, only visitors authorised by the family administrator can post information on the web page.
The link can be applied to new or existing cemetery headstones, cremation urns, or even garden benches or as an addition to a public memorial.
The company can also provide a miniature memorial plaque with the digital link for display at home or in a garden or burial grounds if cremated remains were previously scattered.
A code link and a lifetime subscription to the Living Headstone personal web page costs $75.00 with the purchase of a headstone or monument from Quiring Monuments itself. However, a code link and subscription for an attachment to an existing headstone or memorial costs $150.00.
