Card game helps people talk about death
A new card game launched by Huunuu is helping people have important conversations about death, dying and funerals.
The Crucial Conversations game is a pack of cards designed to encourage people to chat about important issues around end of life, but making it easier – and even fun.
The cards are each designed to stimulate 2-5 minutes of conversation, and fall into three categories: Explore (answer the question – and learn something about yourself and others), Share (read the word out loud and say what it means to you), and Inspire (an interesting fact, followed by a question).
“We're having lots of fantastic feedback from hospices and the NHS trusts we work with,” explains Cherry Williams from huunuu.
“It enables people to discuss topics around death, dying and their funeral in a light-hearted gentle way, that stimulates great conversations. We've also found that they are a useful tool for staff in palliative care settings to play with patients to help them in bringing difficult topics up.
“The cards are available to everyone, and we've played the game up and down the country to interested groups, helping to bring the message about talking about these tricky things whilst they are well enough to do so. It also helps the other players find out more about the other participants.
“We recently worked with Healthwatch Essex and they videoed people playing the game during Dying Matters Week. You can see some of the videos on YouTube (search Healthwatch Essex Dying Matters).”
Cards cost £10 + postage per pack – more at www.huunuu.com/crucialconversations/
Huunuu also provide online tools for funeral and end of life planning, including making a will, power of attorney services, digital assets and an executor toolkit.
