Christmas in soapland: a dangerous time
The festive season is rarely a wholly healthy or happy one in the world of UK TV soap operas, with many a major face meeting a spectacular Yuletide end over the years.
Most recently, EastEnders’ sisters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell drowned in a hotel swimming pool during the former’s wedding celebrations, while previous Christmas Day casualties include Pauline Fowler, Walford’s most famous matriarch and hapless Barry Evans.
Over in Coronation Street, December 25th has been an unlucky day for Maxine Peacock courtesy of serial killer Richard Hillman, and for Ashley Peacock thanks to a Weatherfield tram.
It’s not just the big day either. Tiffany Mitchell was killed in E20 by a car driven by Frank Butcher on New Year’s Eve while a plane crash and a freak storm have wiped out several key characters in December disaster-prone Emmerdale.
This year, there are hints that Walford stalwart Ian Beale may finally meet his maker at the hands of Max, with Abi and Lauren Branning also in the running.
The clever Corrie money is on Gary Windass and Nicola Rubenstein, daughter of dastardly murderer Pat Phelan, while a ‘big stunt’, is set to affect the longevity of members of the White family in Emmerdale.
