NDC opens burial ground
The NDC also runs the Association of Natural Burial Grounds that monitors and audits the the green burial movement in the UK.
Manager Rosie Inman-Cook said she'd long been 'matching-up' people who were considering operating a natural burial ground with existing sites to give them the chance to see the delights and responsibilities of operating a green burial ground.
"We realised that operating a flagship site ourselves, where folk could learn on teh job, combined with offering an affordable and excellent burial option in an area with no provision, would be a natural fit for us," she explained.
"If we manage to make a small profit too, that would help our work at the charity."
Making burial affordable was an important consideration.
"I know from my work on the NDC helpline that many families are quite traumatised when forced to choose cremation on financial grounds," added Rosie.
"Our plots are £600 and we are not charging multiple fees for non-locals. With some crematoria now hitting £900 and some municipal burial plots in the area costing in excess of £4,000, we feel that our prices are bringing burial back as a realistic option once again."
