First ‘green’ funeral clothing launched
Funeral clothing supplier Lyn Oakes has unveiled the funeral world’s first environmentally friendly tailored corporate clothing collection, which even includes buttons derived from a nut.
The Eco Collection, which was created from biodegradable and sustainable sources after Midcounties Co-operative Funeralcare commissioned a ‘green’ clothing range, also claims the position as the UK’s first recyclable corporate clothing range.
“We have developed garments that retain all of the quality and appearance of a traditional Lyn Oakes suit,” said sales director Simon Oakes. “But entirely from biodegradable and sustainable sources, and all within strict environmental guidelines.
“It is a unique collection that gives funeral directors the opportunity to do their part in looking after the environment - without additional cost. The prices are directly comparable with our traditional products.”
All the garments are made using 100% wool or poly-wool derived from natural, sustainable and renewable sources. All interlinings are either viscose (a biodegradable silk-like material made with pine wood pulp from re-cultivated forests) or made using 100% recycled plastic bottles. The buttons are made from the corozo nut, which is found inside a large fruit that grows on the Tagua palms of Ecuador.
“We have been working closely with all of our suppliers to find the very best sustainable options for every element of this collection,” said Simon. “Even the dyes or processes used within the production of the finished materials have been evaluated for pesticide usage and waste management.”
All the Eco Collection garments are tested and adhere to the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. These guidelines test for harmful substances right across the manufacturing process.
In line with Lyn Oakes’ other clothing, the Eco Collection is tailored – offering clients the opportunity to have the garments developed to suit their particular requirements of style and colour. Part of the range has also been specially designed to be washed at lower temperatures, with less detergent and without the need for fabric softener.
