Dignity plc is launching a nationwide direct cremation service at its 44 crematoria.

Called Simplicity Cremations, the service will be a simple, low-cost unattended cremation – the type of low-key service chosen by David Bowie for his funeral early last year – and will be priced at £1,495.

Slots will be made available at Dignity’s crematoria to all other funeral directors wishing to provide direct cremation. These will cost £499 and be offered on a first-come-first served basis to all funeral directors wishing to provide direct cremation.

Simon Cox, head of insight and external affairs at Dignity, said Dignity’s "premium offering" and "highest standards" meant it hadn’t historically targeted the low-cost market, but the launch was in response to industry and consumer calls for lower-cost alternatives.

“We know that a direct cremation isn’t for everyone,” he said. “A funeral service is an important part of the grieving process and can help families achieve closure.

"But consumers are now demanding more choice when arranging a funeral. With our national coverage of funeral homes and 44 crematoria we are in a unique position to provide bereaved families with a low-cost alternative that will be carried out to a high standard and the level of care and respect that Dignity’s customers can expect.”

John Troyer, from The Centre for Death and Society at University of Bath, said he expected to see interest in direct cremation continue to grow.

The Simplicity Cremations service for an unattended cremation, at a time and date of Dignity’s choosing, will cost £1,495 in all  areas, although this excludes doctor’s fees or out-of-hours removals.

It does however, include a basic coffin; the return of or scattering of the ashes; bearers 24-hour telephone access, bereavement counselling; transport for the deceased to a Dignity-owned funeral premise and a specialist funeral vehicle to take the deceased directly to the crematorium; support with paperwork; all necessary arrangements
